I've done it on a '97, and I'm almost certain it had the torx screws as well. It's not exactly easy, but it requires some patience. One thing you absolutely need is a way to lift the engine; without that extra clearance, it would indeed be impossible. I used an engine hoist; not that hard to rig up, and it's useful for other things. Once you've got the engine supported by the hoist, disconnect all the engine mounts and the transmission mount. Lift the engine until you get access to all the screws. No need (or desire) to remove the flywheel cover or the oil pump cover. Once you have all the screws out, it's a bit tricky to coax the pan off; it will catch on one side and on the tubes inside. I had to lift the engine higher to get the pan off than I did to get at the screws.
Having said all that, if you don't have a positive reason (e.g. cracked pan) to remove it, I wouldn't bother. It's not a job I'd do just to look for gritty things in the bottom of the pan.
