A good full set in a package might be helpful but much as I love Sears I've noticed a tendency in them to make up sets that have lots of pieces, but it's oddball stuff you'd never use, that shoots the number way up but wastes space, your attention, and may leave you without something you really ought to have.
A full-range set of metric box-open wrenches used to be 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 19. But now I NEVER see anything 15mm and see lots of things that are 16mm (right, 5/8" SAE fits just fine) and 18mm, for which there's no SAE equivalent. 17mm and 11/16" are functional equals, as are 19mm and 3/4", and 11 mm and 7/16" and, tho 1/2" fits a little snug, you can use it for 13mm.
Used to be you could pick up a quality boxed 40 piece socket set that was worth buying, 3/8" drive, plus a pretty full range of metric and SAE sockets, in both 3/8" and 1/4" drive, an adapter from 3/8 to 1/4, and a drive handle for the 1/4" sockets. True Value hardware still I think sells such a set of worthwhile quality, since all the cheapo sets went to heck in the late 1980s from chasing price and quality ever downwards. The set I got was True Value's last in a metal box; now the case is blowmolded polyethylene, good for holding everything tight in one place. But the metal case had room for lots of extras, the socket sizes it should have had but didn't, a 1/4" ratchet, adapters UP from 1/4 to 3/8 and 3/8 to 1/2, a "wobble" adapter, a 6" extension, telescoping pickup magnet, steel scribe, pick, etc. Amazingly compact, 4"x9"x1 1/2" I'd say.
For the rest, and it can become a lot, make sure to include 8" and 10" Vise Grip pliers, the universal tool. I keep almost all my tools in a heavy canvas LL Bean tote bag.
