A decent set of metric sockets (3/8in drive is ok for most jobs) and a set of combination box/open ended wrenches, 7mm through 19mm (including the odd sizes 16mm and 18mm, because there are a couple of those on the car).
You'll also want a full set of socket extensions, 1", 3", 6", and 12", plus possibly an 18" or 24" one to reach the bolt on the rear lower engine mount from the top.
You'll also want a couple of good sets of torx bits. One regular, one extra long bits to reach in tough spots.
If you are going to take the engine apart, you'll want an external torx (ET16) for the head bolts.
A 27mm deep socket is useful for removing the timing chain tensioner, and for turning the bolt on crank pulley.
Get a good set of beefy snap ring pliers - OTC makes a 16" model that works well. Makes removing the snap ring on the oil pump cover a breeze (not sure if the '92s had this).
special things you might need :
I have a long, offset box ended 13mm wrench that I ground down to make it just a bit skinnier. I use this to loosen the 4 bolts through the turbo flange. I also have a deep socket 13mm bolt that I use to get the exhaust manifold bolts off.
You may also want a brake pad spreader, and a pickle fork. A good set of screw extractor bits come in handy as well (or failing that some old bolts and a welder work too).
A small mallet and a deadblow hammer are also very handy.
Last, but not least, you'll want a good quality torque wrench for putting it all back together.
