High idle on cold start? Posted by ELaw [Email] (#699) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ELaw) on Mon, 5 Nov 2012 07:06:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A few weeks ago my '97 started doing something strange.
When first starting it in the morning, the idle speed is very high. This morning it was initially idling at about 2200 RPM, then slowly settled down to about 1400 over a period of a couple of minutes. That was after sitting overnight with a low temp of about 35 degrees F. I didn't drive the car this particular time, but can say from experience that when this happens the idle will stay higher than normal as long as you drive the car - it doesn't resolve as the engine warms up.
Now here's the odd part: if you start the engine warm, it idles perfectly! It'll spike momentarily to maybe 1400 after the engine catches, then settle back to just under 900 in a few seconds. And it'll continue to idle at the right speed for as long as you drive it.
I know I should go try to pull codes on it but haven't had time so far... I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this before?
