So just to "close the circle" on this thread...
I have to admit I was a little skeptical that cleaning the idle valve would help - I couldn't understand why the valve being dirty would be a problem with the engine cold but not when hot.
Well long story short, I was wrong! Saturday I removed the valve, soaked it in mineral spirits for about an hour, then cleaned it thoroughly with gumout and q-tips.
And the result is... a perfectly-running car. I've only driven the car a couple of times since, but the idle speed issues appear to be gone.
