The gun is too hot to work on a circuit board.
Here is a link to a pretty good tutorial with pictures.
That said, don't fix what isn't broken. You probably won't hurt the controller, but it will be frustrating to do the job only to find that the source of the lock system Alzheimers is somewhere else.
