Ray, thanks for writing up what you can remember. The nylon locknut makes perfect sense. You don't want it to pinch, but you also don't want it to loosen. Some kind of bushing to help it operate smoothly would surely be appreciated by the lock actuator over time.
I need to remove both rear door panels, lube the latchworks and replace the hollow black pivots with something more substantial like you and Mark have done. Then never worry about the pivots again.
