Skill? Luck? Yes. And an easily controllable car. I did not dare touch the brakes as I needed every ounce of control. But I can not depend on that combination forever. I am almost 70 years old. An old lady, really. And I thank whatever powers that be that the tow truck driver did not pick that instant to exit his truck. I could have killed someone easily. I did not fear for my own life as I know my car can sustain a head on collision with minimal damage to the passenger compartment. She has done so once already. I bought the car as a total in 1999. I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt. The lesson I learned? Slow down to the visual speed you can stop in. This does not mean you must drive slowly. At 75 to 85MPH combined with the rise in the highway I was going too fast for what I could see. That speed is fine if you can see far enough ahead to stop safely. I could not do so and it bit me good.
