My '94 sounded all diesel-y like that when I had excessive chain stretch. I had a stuck lifter that probably put additional stress on the chain, stretching it, and guides, wearing them down. Your valve train really shouldn't be that noisy.
In my limited experience, I'd say the diesel noise is a timing system that's been stretched, and the intermittent knock-knock knock-knock could be one or more stuck lifters. Check the surface of the lifters and the cam lobes for unusual wear. If there is excessive scuffing or blueing on one or two lifters, that'd be a good indication - though they can be sticky without producing any wear marks (as was the case with mine).
On my 175k mile car, I tore it down to the block; did the chains and had the head done as well. I had some leaky valve stem seals, and you wouldn't believe the crud that built up in the system from that.
When you have the engine torn down to the block, you can fit the crank pulley bolt and use an electric drill with a 27mm socket to turn the engine over several times. If the knocking is reproduced, you'll know you've got a problem in the block.
