I had this happen twice in 9000s that I owned. It was the clutch slave cylinder both times, but the clutch master cylinder can also give the same symptoms. The clutch slave will leak into the bell housing, which will then drip onto the ground and leave a telltale puddle. Replacing the clutch slave requires separating the engine from the transmission, and whenever I did that, I replaced the clutch at the same time.
