According to Saab's service bulletins, a limited # of late 1980 MY production cars left the factory with BW 37s.

Saab Service Information
Issue No. 01-81-455 Page 56
SUBJECT: New Type 37 Automatic Transmission
The new Type 37 Borg Warner Automatic Transmission was introduced into production close to the end of the 1980 900 model production.
This transmission will be found on some 1980 U.S. Vehicles above the following VIN's:
90801034048
90802010136
90806004439
Should you encounter a 1980 car equipped with one of these transmissions use the Type 37 section of the Automatic Transmission Shop Manual P/N 321299 for reference.
NOTE: Due to the increase in size of the transmission case, it is not possible to install a Type 37 automatic in a 99 model.
--------------------
My read on the last NOTE is a physical interference with the 99 engine bay, as the 1980 900 and the 1980 (and prior...) 99s used the same motor.
Of course, there could always be year to year differences. I've really gotta scan my parts fiche collection in...
