I can help "with" a few queries!
Yes phillips head screws are normal for the cam cover. At least, that's what I've got on mine. And mine are knackered too :(
How does the car drive? Does the boost gauge work? If the boost gauge goes up to the end of the yellow and stay there while accelrating then the wastegate diaphragm is probably ok. If it keeps boosting until the over-boost cuttout kicks in (about 1/4" into the red on mine) then the wastegate is either seized shut or the diaphragm has failed. If it doesn't boost enough, then the wastegate is probably seized open.
I'm not sure about aftermarket wastegates as you'd have to re-work at least the exhaust pipe to fit one, and probably the manifold (header in the US?) as well. Mine was seized open when I got mine, but it didn;t take much to free it off. Diaphragms are about £20 over here, the hard part is finding someone who stocks them :) They last apparently about 30,000 miles. Changing the feed for the wastegate from the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold should increase the lifespan a little.
Reverse: there isn't a synchro on this gear. Make sure you are totally stopped before putting it in reverse. Too much oil or the wrong type in the gearbox can also make it hard to engage gears.
When you say the right control arm, do you mean the top or the bottom one? The bottom ones are easy enough to do with a long bolt and various washers and sockets, but the top ones, in my experience, you have to pull the engine/box out to do it. Unless it's a front one where you might be lucky!
There's a little bit anyway, hope it helps :)
