Volvos of this same time period excepting the problems with metallics that also afflicted BMW's was that the coating was probably still an enamel that was baked or incubated onto the car at the factory before a clear was applied rather than leaving the wet enamel in a booth for 24 hours in a proper but not to extreme (humid or cold) atmosphere to cure, this is another problem with cheap painters, if you get a humid day and they take the car out of the booth before completely drying the enamel it could orange peel if wet, which looks crap. The urethane coatings such as glasurit and basecoat - clearcoat are now can be wet sanded, meaning you can sand the color coat before the clear coat is applied to remove imperfections, another reason why it is more forgiving to paint with than enamel. I think you could get a base-clear paint for the car for probably 200$, dupont or sikkens, glasurit might be slighty more, finding someone to spray it though, youll have to ask around or make a deal with a maaco guy. Its annoying that the vintage car paint shops want either a stripped shell to spray or they wont be interested, thing is that the since you can sand the color coat and the urethane dries faSt it needs attention after its applied, most paint shops wont do much unless their own paint match is completely wrong, they want easy insurance jobs on late model cars. Its tough to find someone to care about painting an old car cheaply and still look good not just one color for resale, look for VW beetle painters in your area, do some work yourself or frankly leave it alone or have too much money too spend which always works. grease some palms, its sounds like im pessimistic but ive seen personally twice someones car with a crap paint job and they immediately sold the car it was so bad, though this was usually due to poor color matching, or saying any green will do and having a car look like a hunter green rubber trash can afterwards with an eighth inch of paint on it. Also ive looked at some cars too purchase with these paint jobs and been disappointed, especially when a color change is attempted and the trunk, interior or engine bay is still the original color.
