I will be making Spline Nuts since none seem to exist Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 17 Nov 2020 07:46:09 In Reply to: Awesome!, jimmy, Mon, 16 Nov 2020 18:26:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 4-speed came with two inner drive shafts of a version later than the Rubber Donut style. Additionally, the hundreds of pounds of misc spare parts which came with the car kit included two additional inner drive shafts which match those in the transmission but are rougher in appearance.
My plan is to measure the distance the center Long Bolt extends from the Rubber Donut Inner Drive shaft, then take one of the rough Inner Drive Shafts to a local Machine Shop to have them cut slices off the splined end to match the bolt extension length, chamfer the OD on one side, and then have them drill and tap each of these nut blanks to match the thread on the Long Bolt which I will verify but seems to be a M8x1.0 thread.
And since you have lots of these old axle parts.....
It appears I need one of the short coil springs which are captive within the Inner Drive Shaft, surrounding the head of the Long Bolt. The Rubber Donut drive shaft parts I bought from a SAAB'er in California included one such spring, about 1-inch tall, 1-1/4 inches diameter, heavy gage wire for the coils. From the Service Manual description (no photos) there is a spring that should be in each axle. At least I think that is where they go without any photo to guide me.
Is my assumption regarding these springs correct? Do you have an extra? You can click the email tab adjacent to my name to respond.
I believe the splined nuts get abandoned in the differential carrier because people fully remove the Long bolt rather than simply back-it off as the Service Manual instructs. The splined nuts may be only 12-15 mm tall so they can get fully removed from the long bolt quite easily. My source in California has been unable to extract the nuts after fully removing the bolts eventhough I sent him a pdf of the SM instructions and an e-mail request to only loosen the bolts during his disassembly.
