are held in the spider gear by a snap ring. To remove them you need to remove the differential, remove the spider gear shaft and then the splined nuts will fall out to the inside.
The threads are 5/16 UNF fine thread, not metric. Your plan to make them is good but your slice will have too big of a hole in the center for threads, since the bolt passes thru it.
I may have some of those nuts but it will be a few days before I can dig out the boxes they might be in. Maybe a spring too. The spring is to keep end play tension on the axle so that it does not rattle around. I have taken cars apart that had no spring, but I can't tell you how well they drove since they were non-running parts cars!
