Definetely go for:
1. a turbo. Less headaches. More fun.
2. 2.3L engines seems to have a degree of issues. Go for 2.0 Turbo.
3. Make sure that idler pulley & belt has been replaced - gives you peace of mind, because if it has more than 50K (miles) this will have to be replaced.
4. Maintenance records, maintenance records, maintenance records. Too many are leased cars which haven't been maintained, and make sure you can contact the previous owner. Talk to thier mechanic. # 1 - make sure that oil change records are available (engine, tranny). Balk from it if this is not available.
5. Love your car - it'll love you back.
6. Above all else, have a Saab mechanic go over your car top to bottom. They know what to look for.
7. 96-98 cars seem to be a better pick, reliability wise.
