I recently purchased a saab and had many of the same questions you do. The responses I received and others I perused in the archives pointed me without question to a 97/98. They do have better brakes, but apparently the main oil seals go on the pre-97 models, a practically guaranteed problem and costly to repair. General consensus, in my opinion, seems to be that more of the problems were worked out in the later model years. 98 had hydraulic clutch, versus clutch cable in 97 & earlier--which are prone to needing replacement. Not a big deal for a DIY, but still something to keep an eye on. pulleys/belt seem to be an issue in all NG900's. I did read somewhere that the 98 had reinforced side beams in the doors--not sure about this. If you're considering buying a non-turbo, I would search the archives for sludge buildup before buying. Just my 2 cents...
they may cost more to upkeep/repair, but I really love my car!
