So I bought my first Saab last week. A '97 900SE Turbo with 104K miles on it. I was posing quesiotns to this BB last week. Because of the high miles it came with no warranty, and the extended warranty they offered was like $2K for 2 years or 24K miles (I'd do that in a year so I balked).

I didn't opt to bring the car to a mechanic even though the dealership offered to pay the first $40 to do so if I wanted to. I suck. I just got a really good feeling from these guys and talked to their mechanic and went through the punchlist of things they did to the car. All minor stuff. Car seemed perfect and the dealer insisted it was pristine inside and out and that, in fact, they usually wholesale anything with over 75K miles but decided to sell this one themselves because it was so nice.

I'm so stupid.

Car drives great, except for over this weekend I notice a little rasping noise I hear when I'm in gear and moving but laying off the gas. Sounds like a vibrating heat shield.

That, and the car seems to drift left on the highway.

So, I called the dealer and he said no problem bring it in we want you to be happy.

So , this AM I bring the car in and am told the drifting left is attributed to road crown and is normal. However, that rasping noise is not a heat shield but a clutch spring that should be replaced. Also, the gearbox housing is leaking and should be repaired. Estimated costs of repairs = $1900

So now I'm sick to my stomach and am about ready to cry. My wife is going to kick my *** and I've got no one to blame but my stupid impulsive immature self.

My question: Assuming I keep this car, what can I realistically expect to pay for the repairs mentioned if done at a more reasonable non-dealer repair shop?

Also, is this something I can do by myself. The service manager mentioned the transmission would need to come out.

If you're not a mechanic or independently wealthy should you be driving a Saab at all.

Sucked in by the romance,
llamamon
