Thank you all for your input, advice, and kindness.
I'm in NH and no lemon law on used vehicles with over 100K miles.
I'm currently waiting to hear back from the sales manager who is going to talk to their service manager to get the *real* story, supposedly.
In the meantime I've taken the car to a Saab specialist nearby that indicated the following:
Rasping noise is definitely from the clutch - sounds like the springs. He thinks the clutch is fine though and shows no signs of slippage and is grabbing low and feels fine. Just noisy and doesn't see the need for a repair currently.
He also confimed that the gearbox is leaking but that it should be fine as long as I keep the fluids up and whenever I do get the clutch serviced next it would make sense to fix the seals.
He indicated that it would cost ~$900 US to have the job done in his shop.
I'm going to ask the dealer to make these repairs and see where it goes.
I'll keep you posted...
