Some states have a minimum warrantable period even if the sale is 'as-is' (just for dealers). Also, if they had this big punchlist and missed a leak, there's a leg to stand on since you considered this information before the sale.
But mechanically...
The common 'gearbox leaks' are axle seals (gear oil) or rear main seal (engine oil). Both are fixed when the gearbox is out, and best to do during a clutch job (labor savings). It's likely one of these...engine oil smells a little like fuel, and axle oil is a little sulfury. You can live with both but for the gearbox you need to make sure you don't get very low. It could just be weeping.
At 100K, I'd put my money on the rear main seal, it's about the right mileage. It's a few bucks on top of a clutch job (as are the axle seals...everyone should do both when the clutch is done).
If you go to a dealer and they *totally* hose you, it should cost around $1300. So, I have no clue where $1900 comes from. Independents, as mentioned, probably price this around $800-900.
Good luck!
