Surface should always be cool. Remove any tar etc with a tar and bug remover prior to wetting down the car. Then wet the surface down very thoroughly, focus on dirty areas and pre wash/rinse away as much dirt and grit prior to washing. Use a good car wash surfactant to float the dirt away. Use a very clean car mitt/ use one mit for top surface and one for bottom surfaces and a seperate one for wheels. Rinse, Rinse, Rinse - - finishing with a good flow of water of water that is not aerated - this will help the water flow off the car - -

I don't use a wheel cleaners because my experience is that they periodically cause brakes to squeek. That is just my theory but . . .

Dry the car with plenty of clean 100% cotton towels (preferably egyptian cotton). Make sure to remove tags from the towels and any rough stitching etc. Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales have really nice egyptian cotton towels. Don't rub the surface and don't dry in a circular motion.

If you see any swirls or marks you a really fine cutting agent to lightly buff any marks, swirls etc.

Make sure you clean around the door sills, trunk areas, open up the hood and dry all around there . . .

Take the car for a really quick ride up and down the street to dry the brakes and flush out any hidden water in mirrors, rims etc. Then dry any water marks/runs.

Once that is all done - - spend some time reflecting on what you just did and then remind yourself that a black car is worth all that work and don't worry - - just like most people the thrill of keeping it perfect will fade after about 6 months. ;-)
