My brother and I just looked very seriously at both the '01 S60 2.4T and '01 9-3SE. He bought the S60 2.4T, I bought the loaded 9-3 SE. My advice is to consider the following:

1) What type of roads do you drive on?
The S60 rides much smoother than the 9-3SE and rough city roads tend to beat you and the Saab pretty good. But if you are slabbing it most of the time, both cars are actually pretty comparable, slightly less road noise in the S60, but very similar.

2) Is the new car your daily driver (in addition to your 'fun' weekend car) or is it your only vehicle?
The S60 is boring but a very capable daily driver - average acceleration (not the rush of a Saab), average handling, smooth powertrain, etc....basic transportation but very low on the fun scale. The Saab is great as my only vehicle as it makes some minor compromises in ride but makes up for it with the rush of great acceleration and handling.

3) Are you more likely to carry 4 adults or 2 adults, 2 kids, dogs, camping gear, etc..?
If you regularly carry 4 full size adults the S60 is superior in cabin space. I think its just the additional shoulder width of the S60 that gives the perception of a much larger cabin as the dimensions between the two are similar. If the pilot is above average in height, the left rear passenger is pretty well squeezed in the 9-3, not so much in the S60. But if you have a dog there is no comparison between the two. Our German Shepherd loves to ride in the hatch area which allows us to carry stuff or other people in the back seat as opposed to the S60 as she hates being locked in the trunk (kidding). The Saab is a great choice if you don't already have an SUV (I sold the Discovery to buy the 9-3) as it provides the same type of large parcel cargo capacity.

4) Are you more of the class valedictorian who is now a buttoned down attorney or were you sleeping in the back of class from being out all night and now run an internet startup?
You can figure out the the valedictorian went with the S60, and the fun brother went with the 9-3.

Attached is link to MSN Carpoint that allows you to compare the two head to head. You really can't go wrong with either car.
