I'm surprised at all the very neutral comments thus far. To me, the S60 represents the culmination of all of Volvo's knowledge to date (2001 at least) and the Saab still smells pretty strongly of 1994 engineering, albeit with various refinements. Having a '99 Viggen and a '94 850 wagon (5spd) with 230,000 miles, I must say I'd tip strongly towards the S60. The engines are proven bombproof as they stem from the 850 lineage. The suspension is up to date. Looks are certainly in the eye of the beholder and I won't touch that department.
I don't know the pricing difference today, but if they are anywhere close, I know which I'd chose! In fact, I'd struggle deciding between the S60 and the Viggen given the same price.
I'm interested in hearing how your test drives go. In the end, trust your fanny!

'99 Vig. 38 k mi. No problems to report, but suspect it will not last as long as my old Volvo. Tell tale signs like surface rusting, minor oil leaks, etc.
'94 855M 230k mi. still has orig. clutch! Car has been incredibly reliable. Still no oil leaks anywhere.
