Here are the details of my experience:

(1) 2001 9-3SE, current mileage = 22,222

(2) Sporadic roughness in engagement/disengagement of gears. Most noticable going into 1st/3rd/Rev, or out of 4th. Sometimes require multiple clutch cycles to get into 1st. Most frequent observation is general roughness of shifting, and particularly lack of smoothness in the 2-3 transition. No obvious correlation with driving conditions or engine temperature. Never has been a major problem, but has always been mildly distracting since I acquired the car (certified pre-owned) in June 2002 with 5k mileage. Has become somewhat more noticable over time.

(3) No repair work to MT or related systems.

I have NOT had the MTF 0063 update performed.

(4b) I have attempted resolution of the problem in one instance at my local dealer, Performance Saab of Houston. While in for my 20k service, I provided a description of the symptoms, along with a printout of the MTF 0063 bulletin from genuinesaab.com, and requested that the fluid be updated. I was told that the problem could not be duplicated, that an adjustment had been made to my shift linkage, and that the fluid had been inspected and looked fine. There has been no noticable improvement of symptoms since the 20k service.

(7) I believe that this is a well-documented and prevalent problem amongst the 9-3 model line, as clearly evidenced by changes in the 2002 model year. Those owners who have made the fluid update have noticed significant improvement. As a means of resolving the symptoms, providing preventative maintenance against future manual transmission problems, and providing appropriate customer service, SaabUSA should cover the fluid update at an authorized Saab dealer as part of warranty coverage on affected vehicles.
