Ultimately, I think the deciding factor will be the comment that superchargers are more expensive than turbos. The accountants always have the last laugh.
Regarding Saab's future, the current President of Saab USA presided over the dissolution of Oldsmobile. Subsequently, there has been a number of senior management positions filled in Sweden with US GM execs. Are they strangling Saab's creativity with the GM bureaucratic malaise?
I was surprised that Saab will be going the Saabaru route to satisfy purists when GM has a much better alternative in its european kit bag. I would have preferred that Saab resurrect the Sonnet in the form of a Opel Speedster (aka Vauxhall VX220) based roadster powered with a Saab turbo engine. Imagine 1900lbs powered by a 240hp 2.3L turbo would put performance in the supercar league (ie. sub 4 second 0-60 times). If you don't know what this car looks like, imagine the Saab grill on the car below:
