Would you buy a house with a shower rather than a bathtub since more people die from slipping getting into and out of a bathtub than getting into and out of a shower? The Side Impact protection is not something to sneeze at but it is only one small part of the "Which car?" conundrum. Is there a Saab dealer close to your son's grad school -obviously he is not mechanically inclined if he didn't notice a burst rad hose in your 9000! Is there a Honda dealer nearby? If it is a small town grad school then he can park the car and walk or ride a bike for most errands and use the car for bigger trips - beyond the "most accidents occur within 5 miles (!?) of home statistic. Saab's accident avoidance capability is legendary, Honda's not quite so but still very good. Big concern, you are talking USED car so the previous owner(s) care will have a lot to do with the car's safety capability - was it properly maintained? I wish you luck with the result of your decision. BTW driving my son's 1994 Saab in a January snowstorm was the reason I bought my 1996 Saab, now replaced with my 1999 9-3, and driving it made me buy my 1987 Saab Convertible. To me easy and close access to a knowledgeable Saab mechanic is a factor for those automotive tasks I can't do myself.
