As the father of two sons in college, I would go with a hatch in the 100,000 plus miles category. Hondas have a good reputation, but I've discovered that parts and repairs by a competant mechanic is about the same cost as my 9-3. One son has a 91 Civic and the other a 92 Integra GS-R. Both are good cars, but I've had problems with ignitors (distributor and a common problem in high mileage Hondas), CV joints, and air conditioners. They are older cars, but from my experience my Saab will probably last longer. Plus it can carry a lot because of the hatch. And the insurance is less expensive on the Saab.
