I have not heard that anyone has compared the old and new DIC, but I wonder if a less expensive capacitor was used to store the charge...
The DIC gets hot because it sits on the engine. It has a circuit board, various electronic parts, and I think the old one had a large capacitor which stores the charge used to make the spark. Large capacitors that can withstand a lot of heat are fairly expensive, and not usually used in cars.
The life of the DIC (and other parts) seems to have gotten shorter on the 9-3 compared to the NG900, one reason why I am reluctant to trade my 96 in for a newer 9-3, even if the NG900 is costing a small fortune to fix. The DIC and head bolts are examples of this.
