Well, the engine compartments became very confined staring with the NG900. So the DI generates its own heat and to do that it must then be warmer than its enviroment. The enviromment is very hot under the hood. And the rad cooling fans are run as little as possible to save power, so there is no excess air flow under the hood enless road speeds are fast enough. The temperatures of the DI in city driving in the summer could be very nasty. When my red DI DIed on my 95SET, it was when stopped at an intersection in the city on one of the hotest days of the year. Walking in that heat did not help my mood much either. I did not have my spare then, but did soon after.
The DI needs its own liquid cooling system, but the cost of that would rival that of a spare DI and then there is the added complexity of that.
