Direct Ignition (DI) Cassette... Posted by REM in Seattle [Email] (#4) [Profile/Gallery] (more from REM in Seattle) on Thu, 6 Jan 2005 20:35:58 In Reply to: Re: DI Cassettes, Dcheng, Wed, 5 Jan 2005 20:56:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The DI cassette in the 1994-1998 900 and the 1999-2002 9-3 Saab is what fires the spark plugs, senses knock, manages the ignition timing, and several other engine management features. The 4 ignition coil packs and all the associated electronics were housed in a single DI cassette located directly on top of the spark plugs and directly in one of the worse areas for engine heat and vibration. These DI cassettes would eventually fail leaving the car inoperable.
The 2003-2005 9-3 has a different arrangement. The components on the DI cassette have been seperated and the more sensitive components have been moved away from the engine heat and vibration. I took a close look at the ignition coil packs in my wife's 2005 9-3 Aero CVT and there appear to be seperate sensor and control wiring going to each coil pack from a central control module located off the engine block. So it appears that the system has some level of redundancy and hopefully better longevity.
