I had a 95SET (NG00) and out of the box, it probably handled better than the 9-3's as it had the larger cast aluminum steering rack with thin rubber rack mounting bushings instead of all the rubber around the smaller rack bodies for 95.5+ production.
I did the SAS sway bar, good tires, Koni's and VRK. It cornered like a dream and the boost was improved as well.
Got rearended and went to an 03 9-5 Aero S/W. Its handling out of the box is very impressive. But it never seems nimble and tossable as the 95SET became. It probably is better than any stock NG or classic 9-3 ever was.
So I am very happy with the 9-5. It handles very well. But its not nimble feeling as the smaller Saabs. And the 9-5 is much more what you get is what you got. With the NGs and 9-3s there were lots of things that needed to be worked on and it was easy and fun to do. The 9-5 does not have the same hacking potential unless you shovel serious money at it.
I also suspect that when modified, the 9-3 can be faster than the 9-5. Somehow the 9-5 seems to be limited by traction control. I will have to try defeating that and see how that feels. The modified 9-3's in 2nd gear can be a wild ride! I never felt that there was any wheel slipping going on with the 95SET. But the 9-5 certainly lights up the traction control light often enough. So, maybe the 9-5 chassis is going to be slower or the traction control is just too sensitive.
My 95SET was always getting MGPs that many here had trouble believing. The T7 9-5 Aero with more than 500 lbs extra weight and more total drag gets even better MPGs. Something there is really right!
