Yeah -- I can relate. What about getting an auto climate system from a junkyard? I imagine something could be retrofitted.
I still think the 399 deal has a decent amount down on an Arc with no options (not that it needs any). I doubt they will come close on an aero -- my Dad looked into it (he is in CT) and couldn't get below $475 with $1500 down on an aero. He then looked at the new 9-3 which you could get for $399 or so.
I loved the aero, but once I am up in the land of bad roads, if I was to get a 9-5 I would get an Arc with 16 inch rims, add the $800 ECU upgrade and the aero sway bars and have a great car.
Just think if you get a new car how crazy it will drive you when you get your first stone chip! I remember the first curb rash on my 02 aero rim - it was small, but boy did it piss me off. A friend of mine who is equally crazy bought a brand new Altima - black -- with 300 miles on it some idiot puts a huge ding with a deep scratch in the door at the mall - no note...gotta love new cars.
I drive the Viggen to NJ this weekend. You will just have to let me know when you have a gathering. Certainly if its on the weekend I should be able to make it.
