tips for avoiding early fuel pump replacement Posted by JohnA [Email] (#426) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JohnA) on Thu, 12 Jan 2006 17:58:38 In Reply to: Time for me to do a fuel pump...Qs->, BobH, Thu, 12 Jan 2006 14:39:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sorry I don't have your driveway tips as I didn't do the job
myself but I have had a fuel pump replaced; I thought too early
at 93K miles. (a '99 9-3)
I asked a few questions. When you spend that kind of money, you're
bound to.
I came up with the following:
- Replace the fuel filter every 40K km/25K miles.
- Run fuel topped up, avoiding running with fuel-low habits, esp
in summer as the fuel pump relies on cool gasoline to keep it from
overheating, thus shortening pump life.
It's said a Bosch fuel pump ought to last 500K km/310K miles
under ideal conditions but bad fuel can kill a pump - even just
one tankfull. Shell ran out a bunch of bad gas here in Alberta
which attacked (esp) certain Chrysler product fuel pumps. When it
was proven their gas was at fault, Shell was reputed to be mighty
cheap on the payouts.
This is not to say Shell has bad gas. In fact, in Canada,
I've read theirs is/was the best overall (except out of the Quebec
refinery, which it was said to be the absolute worst in all of Canada.)
