there's a wrench called maybe a "sink" or "basket" wrench, look at adjustable slip nut wrench at http://doityourself.com/store/2359016.htm , its adjustable and its made for holding/tightening where the pipe goes into a kitchen sink, underneath the sink (not from on top, that's a different kind of tool), you have to hold two small "tabs" to tighten it that are like 4" opposite sides, it's adjustable and spans out to about 4-6" and has a small stub on each end to hold tabs like you describe
I got one cheap for working on the sink just at the hardware store. Might be the tool you need?
