just bought '01 Viggen now big problems - help! Posted by Andrew [Email] (#1013) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Andrew) on Thu, 27 Apr 2006 10:10:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK I need some opinions here from people who have been around these cars...
About 3 weeks ago I purchased on '01 Saab Viggen from a private owner. Everything seemed great with the car, it had a slight whirring noise for a couple seconds after cold starts but it went away quickly and the engine ran great. He said it needed an oil change and I did that, but it did not go away.
Then after driving the car for about 3 hours straight (not hard, I babied this car from day 1) the low oil pressure light flashed on for a couple seconds. It went away and I checked the oil and it was full. Well by the time I got the car home there was a pretty loud tapping noise coming from the head. I took it to the dealership the next day and when I got there they said the car was just looked at by the previous owner and they wanted to drop the oil pan to check to see if the pick up was clogged. So I had them look at and they called me after they looked at it and said the car needed a new timing chain and that the oil pick up was indeed very clogged. They replaced the chain balance shaft chain and flushed the engine, and then I got a call when they were done saying the engine is still knocking and there not sure why but they think it may have spun a balance shaft bearing.
Now they wanted $2700 for the timing chain, 2 lifters and the flush which seemed high to me but I just figured get it over with, I want my car back. Now they want to put a used engine in it from another car! I don't have money for all this and I don't think I should have to pay $2700 for work they did on an engine they want to replace.
If it is indeed the balance shaft bearing, is it possible to do a balance shaft removal on these cars? I ask because I used to have an Eagle Talon Turbo and people did them all the time without problems.
What would you do about the dealership? Can I have fight there $2700 diagnosis?
And do I have any recourse aagainst the guy who sold me the car..I realize it is "as is" but he neglected to tell me they wanted to drop the pan- if he would have let them do that they could have cleaned everything up before it caused any problems.
Thanks for reading this if you made it through the whole thing and please offer your opinion.
