I had the very same problem with my 01' 93SE. There is a recall for certain 01' 93's and I would think it would be the same for the Viggen. The first time, Saab service dropped the oil pan, cleaned the lines and ran two oil/ filter changes through it. The noise went away. Saab did say faulty oil filters were be circulated around that caused the noise at start up, the filter value caused this particular problem. However, the sludge build up was very minor and did not harm the motor at that time. It was fixed Free of charge. Now, the timing chain and/ or main bearing is noisy. Saab noticed it when I was in for service two months later. They said "this is still a part of the previous recall". Meaning, Saab service will fix it again "free of charge". My car has 85K and has always been serviced by Saab...meaning everything. Unfortunately, Saab has had my car now for a whole week fixing this problem...they aren't saying to much, but hey it's not costing me any money. I would think that Saab should fix your car without hesitation considering the previous owner had his/ her service done there. Check and get copies of all the service records from the dealership on the Viggen. Call Saab customer service and if all fails get in touch with district Saab rep. I did this with Volvo with great success. Either I sue the dealership or have the rep look at it. Sure enough the rep came and agreed I was right, they fixed it at a tune of 5K later! Good Luck.
