The 4 hour trip, I think is the ticket here.
If it was the upper idler pulley that broke the bearing, it can be really difficult to say when exactly it will break unless it is obvious noises coming from it but many times isn't.
Also, that same bearing could have lasted many more years if you for instance would have putt around in town or drive 5-10 miles back and forth to work every day. The same goes for water pumps, alternators or many other pregreased roller bearing equipped devices. They can last forever if the time and miles between each run is short and the by now almost empty of grease bearing doesn't get heated up.
But then suddenly, you take the same old bearing that is almost out of grease from years of use and put a grueling 4 hour non stop ride on it, maybe in extra hot weather, and bam! That bearing fails from over heating.
One thing that I don't like, but customers ask me, is to take a good look at the car and tell them if something is wrong because they are planning a long trip.
Just because of what I explained, it really put me in a bad spot and just like your mechanic said, I don't have a crystal ball either and cannot say that this or that device which has worked perfect for years and show no signs of wear or noise, it might not last a 4-5 hour non stop run in hot weather.
