As others have said, older cars require repairs and you have to keep on top of stuff. You may be just hitting a maintenance cycle where a lot needs to be done. It will pass. And maintaining an older car is usually cheaper than making payments. Even a $200 lease or payment is $2400 a year and that's a lot of repairs!
Things like belts and pulleys are wear items. Depending on the car's history, the belt may have been done but the pulleys could be original. But once done, they are good for many miles. Belts can be very durable, and even ones that are cracked and have pieces missing can still work OK. But pulleys and tensioners --on any car-- can fail and destroy even a new belt.
BTW, $750 seems high for a pulley, tensioner, belts and a flex pipe. The parts are maybe $200-250. 2-3 hours of labor.
