Coolant leak: heater core, head gasket or what?

I was in a line of cars this afternoon for about 10 minutes. I started to smell coolant. My gauges showed a normal temp. 10 seconds later, I saw steam coming from under the hood, on the driver's side. I pulled into a parking lot.
There was a trail of coolant behind me and there would soon be about half a gallon on the ground, under the car.
I popped the hood and saw that the coolant reservoir was pressurized and bubbling. I could not really tell where the leak(s) or steam was coming from.
I don't understand why my temp gauge showed a normal temp. Is this a clue to what might be wrong? Bad thermostat? Heater core o-rings? Head gasket?
I plan to top it off with coolant tomorrow and run it again to reproduce the event while watching the engine bay for what might be happening. Is that the best course of action?
I'll report back on what I find to be the issue.
Thank you for any input you can offer.
