To make a nice job and re insulate the crumbling wires with shrink tubing and get a heatsink aluminum bracket installed, it is much easier to remove the fan and work with it on the bench.
I crunch up the old resistor to get as much wire as possible to work with so I don't have to splice and dice new wires in there.
