It has been a few days since you posted so this may not be of much help. If you've found the trouble, please post it. Otherwise, here are a few more thoughts.
Commonly when an engine suddenly starts to overheat, the problem is a bad thermostat. Since replacing the thermostat is a cheap and relatively easy repair, that is the place to start. Even if the thermostat is OK, replacing it isn't a bad bit of preventive maintenance.
If the temperature gauge didn't show an overheat condition, either the sensor is bad or the engine didn't overheat. Replacing the sensor is also cheap and relatively easy. Note, however, that if the sensor isn't immersed in coolant (because it has suddenly leaked away), it could read a normal temperature for a little while.
If the head gasket suddenly failed, you would expect to see steam from the exhaust and the oil would be contaminated. Check the oil to see if it looks OK. A failed head gasket could let a cylinder fill with coolant, which isn't a good thing if you try to start the car.
A final thing to consider is a cracked hose fitting or failed hose that only leaks when the engine temperature builds up and the coolant pressure increases.
