I don't believe that the engine would sound choked if the cat was bad (mine didn't). Usually, if the cat is partially bad, it will show up occasionally (once every 1000 miles or so is my experience). I'm not sure if a bad BPC shows up as an error code, it didn't in my 99 9-3 SE, when the BPC went poor. Good luck. Let me know how you solve it.
