New clutch, no more issues Posted by rancor [Email] (#1529) [Profile/Gallery] (more from rancor) on Mon, 9 Jun 2014 13:45:16 In Reply to: Re: '99 9-3 fails to accelerate with no obvious cause, Thomas333639 [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 4 May 2014 18:46:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, replacing the clutch did the trick. The old clutch disk was almost completely metalized, and there wasn't more than a few millimeters of friction material on either side., Fortunately, all of the rivets wore flat, so there was no flywheel or pressure plate damage, and thus no noises... It was pretty obvious what was happening once we went to pull in onto the trailer, put it that way.
As I'd suspected, the car also needed the differential bushing job, which added some confusion to the situation. Fortunately it's an easier job with the transmission up on the bench, I'll have to post up a more detailed thread with some pictures on that job, since I wasn't too happy with the documentation that's out there.
Anyway, this got the car pretty well upgraded, since I went to the Viggen clutch disk and pressure plate, as well as replacing the worn engine and transmission mounts with the GS poly units. And with the subframe already off and the car up, fitting the GS subframe and steering rack braces was also pretty straightforward. Combined with some new swaybar end links and poly bushings, the car feels like a whole different beast!
