Hi all,
I need a little immediate reassurance or assistance please! Right now I’m on the side of a side road. Is my clutch cable about to let go? Should I try driving home?

The situation is: Driving to the next bigger town today (45 miles), about 4pm in heavy traffic. Stop n go, 15 mph, 75mph for a bit and then back to stop n go, 15 mph, stop n go, 15 mph n 55 mph. For about the last 10 miles or so, the clutch pedal was going halfway to floor, with shifting getting more difficult.

I made it to where I needed to be by driving that last distance at 55. In the r/h lane, trying to keep enough space so as traffic slowed down I didn’t have to shift, drove mostly in 3rd gear, shifting to 2nd gear only when absolutely required. When I went to turn the car off on arrival, reverse gear was very difficult to engage.

So now it’s a few hours later (7pm). After the engine had cooled down enough, I started poking around engine compartment. The good news, the strand/braided end of the cable approaching gearbox arm is intact/not frayed. However, there is a rubber? cone on the cable with about a 1/2” or so round part extending from the back/flat side of the cone. It looks like it would go into where the cable housing? (small slot on it to slide bare cable in) seems to end. This “cone” is sliding freely up and down the cable wire.

I took pictures, but I’ve never had luck trying to post them. So I hope my description is clear enough to understand. On the way down return traffic was equally bad, but hopefully it’s lightened up some by now. If you get the idea, any guesses/ideas if the car will be okay to drive home? Either in light or heavy traffic? Do I need to call AAA for a tow? Is this cone part fixable/glueable in the housing? Am I looking at replacing the cable? If any of you can, help please! 🙁
