I come before you with head bowed, hat in hand.
Turns out, I had the hex key in the transmission when it was in reverse gear. The stick was way over to the left when in Neutral and what I thought was 2nd gear, was actually 4th. So, I was putting the stick in reverse, then putting the hex key in the transmission. In my defense, if I have any, the hex key did drop in and prevented the changing of gears. However, when I put the stick in what I thought was 2nd gear, but actually 4th, the hex key also dropped right in but much deeper and more easily. I can't remember how this could've happened. At some point, I must have had it in Reverse when I started the alignment. Funny thing is, the first time I reinstalled the housing, I did have 1st through 4th gear but I couldn't get it all the way into Reverse to remove the key. So I tried to make another adjustment, and the nightmare began.
I ended up again having 1st through 4th gear but couldn't quite get it all the way into Reverse to remove the key. I guess I tightened that T-30 lock screw too much that holds the big bracket. Once I loosened it, I could remove the key.
Another misadventure brought to you by the crawdad.
Thanks to you both. Your responses kept me thinking and looking at it in a different way.
