Thinking about it, it seems maybe I can’t tell between high and low speed with all the noise from the engine running. So it may be that when the fan comes on, it is the low speed fan. So, in that case, it’s not an issue of the low speed relay triggering the high speed fan, but rather the low speed fan coming on in high temp situations and the high speed not coming on at all.
Just to confirm that I’m not an idiot (thinking that normal operation is a problem)-
The low speed fan should come on:
-At, or below, 9 o’clock on the temperature gauge
-for cycles longer than 30 seconds
-briefly after the engine has been stopped
-whenever the A/C is running
Right? (It’s not doing any of that).
And the high speed fan should only come on:
-at or above 9 o’clock on the temperature gauge
-for cycles of about 30 seconds
Right? (This seems to be when my low speed fan is turning on).
If I’m correct on those points, then it seems that my low speed fan is coming on in high temp situations and my high speed fan is not coming on at all.
It could be that the fan is working normally and I’m totally crazy, but the engine seems way too hot for that to be the case. It got hot enough to raise the outside temperature display on the SID by at least 10°, and baked some JB Weld I had on my (now replaced) throttle cable to the point of almost disintegrating.
Thanks again for all your help troubleshooting!
