the belt wasn't tensioned right and jumped a few teeth, not enough to not run but enough so that the valves are banging the pistons. I would urge him to start by removing the timing cover and checking the valve timing, not pulling the oil pan. A similar thing happened to someone else a few weeks back but not right after a belt change.
