Now, let me recap. The engine starts, it is noisy and the oil pressure lamp is on.
Now the noise is due to lack of oil pressure. Oil pressure is needed for the hydraulic lifters to work silently. So let us go systematicly.
1) find the reason for the oil low pressure (Bad pump, clogged oil galleries, clogged oil cooler, clogged oil pump screen and also it could be a bad journal bearing) remove the oil pan and inspect. A good mechanic can tell you.
2) Now because your damage happened just after a timing belt change check the timing belt and make sure it did not jump.
3) Now if you have a bad bearing you can change the bad bearing only. You need to find a mechanic that is willing to do this job it is time consuming and not simple most mechanic will ask for a complete engine overhaul.
so in brief if a bearing or a connecting rod is damaged you need a new engine, if not you can fix the engine. A new engine is about 3000 to 4000 US$.
Best of luck
Gabriel
