I'm going to agree with Greg D. It's not a quick thing to drop the oil pan, one must first remove the sub-frame, then the oil pan is stuck on with bolts and a gasket that needs prying off and that then needs replacing, then you have to remove the sump pickup and anti-slosh baffles, you're looking at a day's work, even though its only a few $$ for the new gasket and five minutes to inspect the rods.

Plus your symptoms sound like Greg D describes. I wonder what would cause the low oil light? I don't recall how oil is circulated, I assume there's a pump hooked up to one of the belts? Top ends are available for sale from a site sponsor, fairly expensive, others here have done so so search the BB for price.
