Click into just about any automobile bulletin board on the web and you will find this same discussion as a recurrent theme for at least the past five years. What's most striking, though, is that the arguments for and against haven't moved an inch over all that time, and it still isn't really possible to say that one side is right and the other wrong. What I would say to Peter H is that switching back to dino shouldn't be a problem, but in my experience it won't help now that the damage is done. In other words, that engine will now leak until you change the relevant seals, and the only likely advantage of switching back to dino is that it might leak a little less; but as Ian D pointed out, at this stage you may as well keep the benefits of synthetic (which I don't think anyone can seriously doubt?) and live with a bit of seepage.
This theme is bugging me too, as I also want to switch my '95 900S (120000 miles) to synthetic, but having already learnt the hard way with two other (non-Saab) engines I'm reluctant to take the risk of having my nice clean engine go greasy overnight. There seems to be no sure way of knowing in advance whether an engine will stay oil-tight or not, but it seems reasonable to assume that a car which has been driven regularly and serviced properly will have seals in better condition than one which has stood for longish periods and/or not had frequent oil changes.
If I ever make up my mind to switch, I'll let you know whether I'm one of the lucky ones!
Regards,
Andy
